Minutes Matter - Can We See Your Address Numbers?

When an emergency strikes—whether it’s a medical crisis, a structural fire, or a sudden accident—every second counts. As a community, we often focus on having working smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, but there is one crucial safety measure that many residents overlook: the visibility of their home address.

Imagine this scenario: you call 911. Dispatch immediately alerts the nearest station, and an ambulance or fire engine is rolling within minutes. They have your street name, your cross-street, and your house number. They arrive on your road, but as they search for your home, they are forced to slow down, squinting to identify numbers that are obscured by overgrown bushes, faded by years of sun exposure, or simply too small to read from a distance. Precious moments are lost. This delay can be the difference between a minor incident and a tragic outcome.

The Bedington Volunteer Fire Department is asking all residents of Berkeley County to perform a simple self-audit: Can a stranger, in a hurry, in the dark, find your house?

To help us help you, please ensure your home address meets these critical guidelines:

• Size Matters: Your address numbers should be large—at least 4 inches tall for residential homes. For properties set back far from the road, 6 inches or larger is necessary.

• Contrast is Key: Choose colors that stand out dramatically. Light numbers on a dark house or post, or dark numbers on a white or light-colored background, are essential for daylight reading.

• Make it Shine: Numbers must be reflective. Non-reflective numbers vanish completely in darkness or poor weather. Emergency vehicles use spotlights, and reflective numbers are designed to catch that light instantly.

• Clear the Path: Over time, landscaping can grow to block your sign. Regularly trim back bushes, tree branches, or other decorations that might obscure your numbers.

• Multiple Views: Ensure the numbers are visible from both directions on your street. If your house is not visible from the road, your number must be posted clearly at the entrance to your driveway.
