Where is the Smoke Coming From?? |
| July 17, 2026 | |
| The smoke clogging American skies is being fueled by two major regions: Northwestern Ontario, Canada: The largest share of the smoke is originating just across the border, where more than 100 active wildfires are burning out of control due to severe drought and intense heat. High-altitude, northwesterly winds are acting like a conveyor belt, pulling these massive plumes straight down into the U.S. Northern Minnesota: A series of severe, fast-moving wildfires have erupted in and around the remote Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. These localized fires have grown rapidly, triggering historic, record-shattering smoke levels locally before drifting southeastward.
